Being a major health problem of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Leptospirosis is the priority area of research of the Centre. The Centre has also been designated as the National Leptospirosis Reference Centre. Studies being conducted include outbreak investigations, hospital based surveillance at a national level, characterization of circulating serovars in different parts of the country, development and evaluation of rapid diagnostic kits and operational research on control strategies. The Centre maintains reference strains of almost all serogroups of leptospires and many human, animal and environmental isolates. Facilities for genetic characterization using RFLP, REA and RAPD are also exist in the Centre. |
